Gigabits to Gigabytes formula
To convert gigabits to gigabytes, multiply by 0.125.
GB = Gb × 0.125
Put another way, one gigabit is exactly 1/8 of a gigabyte.
Why this factor: the gigabit and the gigabyte are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 0.125 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.
To go the other way, divide by 0.125 — or use the Gigabytes to Gigabits converter, which is the same calculation reversed.
Worked example
Start with 4 Gb. Multiply by 0.125 to get 0.5 GB.
4 Gb × 0.125 = 0.5 GB
The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.
What is a gigabit?
A gigabit is one billion bits, the unit of modern high-speed networking.
Definition: Exactly 1,000,000,000 bits, so exactly 125,000,000 bytes.
Where it is used: Gigabit Ethernet, fiber broadband tiers, and data-centre interconnects.
What is a gigabyte?
A gigabyte is one billion bytes — the everyday unit of storage and memory capacity.
Definition: Exactly 1,000,000,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes.
Where it is used: Phone and laptop storage, RAM capacity, video file sizes, and cloud storage plans.
Gigabits vs Gigabytes
The gigabit and the gigabyte belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.
Frequently asked questions
How many gigabytes are in a gigabit?
One gigabit equals 0.125 gigabytes.
What is the formula to convert gigabits to gigabytes?
Multiply the number of gigabits by 0.125. To reverse it, divide by 0.125 instead.
How do I convert gigabytes back to gigabits?
Divide by 0.125, which is the same as multiplying by 8.
How many gigabytes are in 10 gigabits?
10 Gb works out to 1.25 GB.
How is the gigabit defined?
Exactly 1,000,000,000 bits, so exactly 125,000,000 bytes.
