Hectares to Square Meters formula
To convert hectares to square meters, multiply by 10000.
m² = ha × 10000
Put another way, one hectare is exactly 10,000 square meters.
Why this factor: the hectare and the square meter are both defined against the square meter, so dividing one definition by the other gives 10000 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.
To go the other way, divide by 10000 — or use the Square Meters to Hectares converter, which is the same calculation reversed.
Worked example
Take 50 ha and multiply by the factor 10000: the result is 500000 m².
50 ha × 10000 = 500000 m²
The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.
What is a hectare?
A hectare is the standard metric unit of land area — a 100-meter square.
Definition: Exactly 10,000 square meters, which is one square hectometer.
Where it is used: Agricultural and forestry land, development sites, and land-use statistics worldwide.
Worth knowing: Roughly two and a half acres, and almost exactly the area of an international rugby pitch.
What is a square meter?
The square meter is the SI unit of area — the surface of a one-meter square.
Definition: Derived directly from the meter.
Where it is used: Floor area in property listings, land plots, and material coverage worldwide outside the US.
Hectares vs Square Meters
The hectare is a metric unit while the square meter is an SI unit. That is why the factor between them is not a round number: the two systems were defined independently and only later tied together by exact agreement.
