How the Tip Calculator works
Works out a tip and the total, and splits the bill across a group — the calculation everyone reaches for at the end of a meal.
The tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage. The total is bill plus tip, and the per-person amount divides that by the number of people.
tip = bill × rate, total = bill + tip, each = total ÷ people
Worked example
A $85 bill at 20% adds $17 for a $102 total. Split four ways that is $25.50 each.
Things worth knowing
- US norms: 15–20% at restaurants, 20% standard for good service, $1–2 per drink at a bar, 15–20% for taxis.
- Tipping culture varies enormously. Service is usually included in much of Europe, and tipping can be actively unwelcome in Japan.
- Check whether a service charge is already on the bill — common for large groups — before adding a tip on top.
