Barcode Generator
Generate a barcode in several formats and download it as a PNG image.
How to use
- Type the value to encode.
- Choose a barcode format (CODE128 works for most text).
- Download the barcode as a PNG.
How the Barcode Generator works
Generates standard retail and logistics barcodes — EAN, UPC, Code 128 and others — as downloadable images.
Each symbology encodes digits or characters into a specific pattern of bars and spaces of varying width, following its published standard. Most retail formats include a check digit computed from the preceding digits.
EAN-13 · UPC-A 12 digits · Code 128 alphanumeric · Code 39 legacy alphanumeric
Worked example
A 12-digit UPC-A input generates the bar pattern plus the check digit that scanners use to verify the read.
Things worth knowing
- EAN and UPC are fixed-length numeric formats for retail. Code 128 handles arbitrary alphanumeric data and suits internal logistics.
- Real retail barcodes need a GS1-issued company prefix. Self-generated codes work for internal use but not for public sale.
- Preserve the quiet zone either side of the bars, and do not stretch the image non-uniformly — both break scanning.
Frequently asked questions
Which format should I use?
CODE128 handles letters and numbers; EAN-13 and UPC are for retail product codes with specific digit counts.
Is the barcode scannable?
Yes — it's generated to spec and downloads as a clean, scannable PNG.
Can I use these on products I sell in shops?
Only with a GS1-registered prefix. Retailers require globally unique numbers, which GS1 issues.
