YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste a YouTube link and grab its thumbnail in full HD and smaller sizes.

How to use

  1. Paste a YouTube video URL (or its 11-character ID).
  2. The HD thumbnail appears with size options.
  3. Click a size and save the image.

How the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader works

Retrieves the thumbnail images YouTube generates for a video, at each available resolution.

YouTube exposes thumbnails at predictable URLs derived from the video ID. The tool extracts the ID from any YouTube URL form and builds the image links.

maxresdefault 1280×720 · sgddefault 640×480 · hqdefault 480×360 · mqdefault 320×180

Worked example

A watch URL, a youtu.be short link and an embed URL all contain the same 11-character video ID, which is what the thumbnail URLs are built from.

Things worth knowing

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes are available?

Full HD (maxres), High and Medium — availability of maxres depends on the original upload.

Can I use the thumbnail?

Thumbnails are owned by the video creator; use them in line with copyright and fair-use rules.

Why is the maximum resolution missing?

Not every video has one. YouTube only serves maxresdefault when the uploaded thumbnail was at least 1280×720.

What size should my own thumbnails be?

1280×720 at 16:9, under 2 MB. They are frequently viewed at a fraction of that, so large readable text matters more than fine detail.
