How to use

  1. Enter a value in the Bytes field.
  2. The Kilobits figure appears immediately — no button to press.
  3. Typing in the Kilobits field converts back to Bytes the same way.
  4. Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.

Bytes to Kilobits formula

To convert bytes to kilobits, multiply by 0.008.

Kb = B × 0.008

Put another way, one byte is exactly 1/125 of a kilobit.

Why this factor: the byte and the kilobit are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 0.008 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.

To go the other way, divide by 0.008 — or use the Kilobits to Bytes converter, which is the same calculation reversed.

Worked example

Start with 500 B. Multiply by 0.008 to get 4 Kb.

500 B × 0.008 = 4 Kb

The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.

What is a byte?

A byte is eight bits — historically the space for one text character, and the standard unit of file size.

Definition: Exactly 8 bits.

Where it is used: File and storage sizes, memory capacity, and data quotas.

What is a kilobit?

A kilobit is 1,000 bits, used almost exclusively for data rates.

Definition: Exactly 1,000 bits, so exactly 125 bytes.

Where it is used: Audio and video bitrates, and legacy connection speeds.

Bytes vs Kilobits

The byte and the kilobit belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.

Frequently asked questions

How many kilobits are in a byte?

One byte equals 0.008 kilobits.

What is the formula to convert bytes to kilobits?

Multiply the number of bytes by 0.008. To reverse it, divide by 0.008 instead.

How do I convert kilobits back to bytes?

Divide by 0.008, which is the same as multiplying by 125.

How many kilobits are in 10 bytes?

10 B works out to 0.08 Kb.

How is the byte defined?

Exactly 8 bits.
