Kilobits to Bytes
Type a value in either box to convert between kilobits and bytes. The factor is 125.
| Kilobits | Bytes |
|---|---|
| 1 Kb | 125 B |
| 2 Kb | 250 B |
| 3 Kb | 375 B |
| 5 Kb | 625 B |
| 10 Kb | 1250 B |
| 25 Kb | 3125 B |
| 50 Kb | 6250 B |
| 100 Kb | 12500 B |
How to use
- Enter a value in the Kilobits field.
- The Bytes figure appears immediately — no button to press.
- Typing in the Bytes field converts back to Kilobits the same way.
- Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.
Kilobits to Bytes formula
Converting kilobits to bytes is a single multiplication by 125.
B = Kb × 125
Put another way, one kilobit is exactly 125 bytes.
Why this factor: the kilobit and the byte are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 125 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.
To go the other way, divide by 125 — or use the Bytes to Kilobits converter, which is the same calculation reversed.
Worked example
Given 4 Kb, multiplying by 125 yields 500 B.
4 Kb × 125 = 500 B
The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.
What is a kilobit?
A kilobit is 1,000 bits, used almost exclusively for data rates.
Definition: Exactly 1,000 bits, so exactly 125 bytes.
Where it is used: Audio and video bitrates, and legacy connection speeds.
What is a byte?
A byte is eight bits — historically the space for one text character, and the standard unit of file size.
Definition: Exactly 8 bits.
Where it is used: File and storage sizes, memory capacity, and data quotas.
Kilobits vs Bytes
The kilobit and the byte belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.
Frequently asked questions
How many bytes are in a kilobit?
One kilobit equals 125 bytes.
What is the formula to convert kilobits to bytes?
Multiply the number of kilobits by 125. To reverse it, divide by 125 instead.
How do I convert bytes back to kilobits?
Divide by 125, which is the same as multiplying by 0.008.
How many bytes are in 10 kilobits?
10 Kb works out to 1250 B.
How is the kilobit defined?
Exactly 1,000 bits, so exactly 125 bytes.
