Bytes to Kilobytes
Type a value in either box to convert between bytes and kilobytes. The factor is 0.001.
| Bytes | Kilobytes |
|---|---|
| 1 B | 0.001 KB |
| 2 B | 0.002 KB |
| 3 B | 0.003 KB |
| 5 B | 0.005 KB |
| 10 B | 0.01 KB |
| 25 B | 0.025 KB |
| 50 B | 0.05 KB |
| 100 B | 0.1 KB |
How to use
- Enter a value in the Bytes field.
- The Kilobytes figure appears immediately — no button to press.
- Typing in the Kilobytes field converts back to Bytes the same way.
- Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.
Bytes to Kilobytes formula
To convert bytes to kilobytes, multiply by 0.001.
KB = B × 0.001
Put another way, one byte is exactly 1/1,000 of a kilobyte.
Why this factor: the byte and the kilobyte are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 0.001 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.
To go the other way, divide by 0.001 — or use the Kilobytes to Bytes converter, which is the same calculation reversed.
Worked example
Take 500 B and multiply by the factor 0.001: the result is 0.5 KB.
500 B × 0.001 = 0.5 KB
The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.
What is a byte?
A byte is eight bits — historically the space for one text character, and the standard unit of file size.
Definition: Exactly 8 bits.
Where it is used: File and storage sizes, memory capacity, and data quotas.
What is a kilobyte?
A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in the decimal convention used by storage manufacturers and standards bodies.
Definition: Exactly 1,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary equivalent, 1,024 bytes, is properly the kibibyte (KiB).
Where it is used: Small file sizes, text documents, and web page weights.
Worth knowing: This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.
Bytes vs Kilobytes
The byte and the kilobyte belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilobytes are in a byte?
One byte equals 0.001 kilobytes.
What is the formula to convert bytes to kilobytes?
Multiply the number of bytes by 0.001. To reverse it, divide by 0.001 instead.
How do I convert kilobytes back to bytes?
Divide by 0.001, which is the same as multiplying by 1000.
How many kilobytes are in 10 bytes?
10 B works out to 0.01 KB.
Is there anything to watch out for with kilobytes?
This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.
How is the byte defined?
Exactly 8 bits.
