How to use

  1. Enter a value in the Kilobytes field.
  2. The Bytes figure appears immediately — no button to press.
  3. Typing in the Bytes field converts back to Kilobytes the same way.
  4. Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.

Kilobytes to Bytes formula

Converting kilobytes to bytes is a single multiplication by 1000.

B = KB × 1000

Put another way, one kilobyte is exactly 1,000 bytes.

Why this factor: the kilobyte and the byte are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 1000 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.

To go the other way, divide by 1000 — or use the Bytes to Kilobytes converter, which is the same calculation reversed.

Worked example

Given 64 KB, multiplying by 1000 yields 64000 B.

64 KB × 1000 = 64000 B

The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.

What is a kilobyte?

A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in the decimal convention used by storage manufacturers and standards bodies.

Definition: Exactly 1,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary equivalent, 1,024 bytes, is properly the kibibyte (KiB).

Where it is used: Small file sizes, text documents, and web page weights.

Worth knowing: This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.

What is a byte?

A byte is eight bits — historically the space for one text character, and the standard unit of file size.

Definition: Exactly 8 bits.

Where it is used: File and storage sizes, memory capacity, and data quotas.

Kilobytes vs Bytes

The kilobyte and the byte belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.

Frequently asked questions

How many bytes are in a kilobyte?

One kilobyte equals 1000 bytes.

What is the formula to convert kilobytes to bytes?

Multiply the number of kilobytes by 1000. To reverse it, divide by 1000 instead.

How do I convert bytes back to kilobytes?

Divide by 1000, which is the same as multiplying by 0.001.

How many bytes are in 10 kilobytes?

10 KB works out to 10000 B.

Is there anything to watch out for with kilobytes?

This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.

How is the kilobyte defined?

Exactly 1,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary equivalent, 1,024 bytes, is properly the kibibyte (KiB).
