GPA Calculator
Add each course's grade and credit hours to calculate your weighted GPA.
How to use
- Add a row for each course.
- Pick the letter grade and enter the credit hours.
- Your weighted GPA updates automatically; add or remove courses anytime.
How the GPA Calculator works
Calculates grade point average from letter grades and credit hours on the standard US 4.0 scale.
Each letter maps to grade points, which are multiplied by the credit hours for that course. GPA is the sum of those products divided by total credits — a weighted average, so heavier courses count more.
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
A 4.0 · A− 3.7 · B+ 3.3 · B 3.0 · B− 2.7 · C+ 2.3 · C 2.0 · C− 1.7 · D 1.0 · F 0
Worked example
An A in a 3-credit course and a B in a 4-credit course gives (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 = 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43.
Things worth knowing
- Credits are what make it a weighted average. A poor grade in a 5-credit course hurts far more than the same grade in a 1-credit one.
- Some institutions use a weighted scale where honours and AP courses run to 5.0. This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.
- Cumulative GPA covers all terms; term GPA covers one. Later terms move a cumulative average less as total credits accumulate.
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Each grade maps to grade points (A=4.0), multiplied by the course's credits. GPA is total grade points divided by total credits.
What grade scale is this?
It uses the standard US 4.0 scale with plus/minus grades.
Does a plus or minus change my GPA much?
Each step is 0.3 grade points on that course. Across a single course it is small; repeated across a transcript it compounds noticeably.
How do pass/fail courses count?
Usually they are excluded from GPA entirely while still counting toward credits earned. Check your institution's policy.
