Spell out any whole number in English words.
How to use

- It's spelled out in English words.
- Copy it for cheques, contracts or documents.
How the Number to Words Converter works
Spells numbers out in words — required on cheques, contracts and legal documents where a figure must appear in both forms.
The number is split into groups of three digits from the right. Each group is spelled out as hundreds, tens and units, then suffixed with its scale word — thousand, million, billion.
Worked example
1234 becomes 'one thousand two hundred thirty-four'.
Things worth knowing
- The short scale used here is standard in English: a billion is 10⁹. Some languages use the long scale where a billion is 10¹².
- British usage typically inserts 'and' before the final part — 'one hundred and one' — while American usage omits it.
- On cheques, the written amount legally overrides the numeric one if they disagree.
Frequently asked questions
How large a number works?
Up to the trillions — beyond that the words get impractical.
Does it handle decimals?
It spells the whole-number part; round or split off cents separately for currency.
Should I write 'and' in the number?
British convention includes it; American convention does not. For cheques, follow your bank's example.
How do I write cents on a cheque?
Conventionally as a fraction over 100, for example 'One hundred and 50/100'.
