Ideal Weight Calculator
Estimate a healthy target weight for your height with two established formulas.
How to use
- Choose your sex.
- Enter your height in centimetres.
- See your estimated ideal weight from two formulas.
How the Ideal Weight Calculator works
Gives a reference weight range for your height using the Devine and Robinson formulas, both long-standing clinical rules of thumb.
Both formulas set a base weight at five feet and add a fixed amount for each inch above that. Devine adds 2.3 kg per inch; Robinson uses a slightly lower base and 1.9 kg per inch.
Devine: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg/inch over 5ft · women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg/inch
Robinson: men 52 kg + 1.9 kg/inch over 5ft · women 49 kg + 1.9 kg/inch
Worked example
A man of 180 cm is about 70.9 inches, so 10.9 inches over five feet. Devine gives 50 + 25.1 = 75.1 kg; Robinson gives 52 + 20.7 = 72.7 kg.
Things worth knowing
- These formulas were developed for clinical drug dosing, not as aesthetic or health targets. Treat them as reference points only.
- They take no account of frame size, muscle mass, age or body composition — a lifter can be well above 'ideal' weight and in excellent health.
- A healthy weight is a range, not a single number. The spread between formulas is itself a hint at how imprecise the concept is.
Frequently asked questions
Which formula is best?
Both are widely used estimates; treat the range between them as a healthy target, not an exact number.
Does it account for build?
No — frame size and muscle mass vary, so use it as a guide alongside other measures.
