Running Pace Calculator
Find your running pace per kilometre or mile, plus your average speed.
How to use
- Enter the distance you ran and its unit.
- Enter your total time in minutes.
- See your pace per km/mile and your average speed.
How the Running Pace Calculator works
Converts a distance and finishing time into pace per mile or kilometre, plus average speed — the numbers runners actually train and race to.
Pace is total time divided by distance, then the fractional minutes are converted into seconds. Average speed is distance divided by time in hours.
pace = time ÷ distance speed = distance ÷ (minutes ÷ 60)
Worked example
A 10 km run in 52 minutes is 5.2 minutes per km — displayed as 5:12/km — at an average speed of 11.54 km/h.
Things worth knowing
- Common marathon reference points: a 4-hour finish is about 5:41/km or 9:09/mile; a 3-hour finish is about 4:16/km or 6:52/mile.
- Race pace is usually well above easy training pace. A widely used guideline puts roughly 80% of training volume at conversational effort.
- Heat, hills and wind all cost time. Comparing paces only makes sense on similar terrain and conditions.
Frequently asked questions
How is running pace measured?
Pace is time per unit of distance — for example minutes per kilometre — the lower the number, the faster you ran.
Can I use it for cycling or walking?
Yes — it works for any activity where you cover a distance in a time.
What is a good 5K time?
Very roughly: under 30 minutes is a solid recreational benchmark, under 25 is strong, and under 20 is competitive for most age groups.
How do I convert between per-mile and per-km pace?
Multiply per-km pace by 1.609 to get per-mile. A 5:00/km pace is about 8:03/mile.
