  3. Typing in the Bytes field converts back to Megabits the same way.
  4. Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.

Megabits to Bytes formula

Converting megabits to bytes is a single multiplication by 125000.

B = Mb × 125000

Why this factor: the megabit and the byte are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 125000 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.

To go the other way, divide by 125000 — or use the Bytes to Megabits converter, which is the same calculation reversed.

Worked example

Take 64 Mb and multiply by the factor 125000: the result is 8000000 B.

64 Mb × 125000 = 8000000 B

The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.

What is a megabit?

A megabit is one million bits — the unit internet speeds are advertised in.

Definition: Exactly 1,000,000 bits, so exactly 125,000 bytes.

Where it is used: Broadband speed tiers and video streaming bitrates, quoted as Mb/s or Mbps.

Worth knowing: Divide advertised megabits per second by 8 to get the megabytes per second a download will actually show.

What is a byte?

A byte is eight bits — historically the space for one text character, and the standard unit of file size.

Definition: Exactly 8 bits.

Where it is used: File and storage sizes, memory capacity, and data quotas.

Megabits vs Bytes

The megabit and the byte belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.

Frequently asked questions

How many bytes are in a megabit?

One megabit equals 125000 bytes.

What is the formula to convert megabits to bytes?

Multiply the number of megabits by 125000. To reverse it, divide by 125000 instead.

How do I convert bytes back to megabits?

Divide by 125000, which is the same as multiplying by 8e-06.

How many bytes are in 10 megabits?

10 Mb works out to 1250000 B.

Is there anything to watch out for with megabits?

Divide advertised megabits per second by 8 to get the megabytes per second a download will actually show.

How is the megabit defined?

Exactly 1,000,000 bits, so exactly 125,000 bytes.
