How to use

  1. Enter a value in the Megabits field.
  2. The Kilobytes figure appears immediately — no button to press.
  3. Typing in the Kilobytes field converts back to Megabits the same way.
  4. Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.

Megabits to Kilobytes formula

To convert megabits to kilobytes, multiply by 125.

KB = Mb × 125

Put another way, one megabit is exactly 125 kilobytes.

Why this factor: the megabit and the kilobyte are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 125 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.

To go the other way, divide by 125 — or use the Kilobytes to Megabits converter, which is the same calculation reversed.

Worked example

Start with 4 Mb. Multiply by 125 to get 500 KB.

4 Mb × 125 = 500 KB

The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.

What is a megabit?

A megabit is one million bits — the unit internet speeds are advertised in.

Definition: Exactly 1,000,000 bits, so exactly 125,000 bytes.

Where it is used: Broadband speed tiers and video streaming bitrates, quoted as Mb/s or Mbps.

Worth knowing: Divide advertised megabits per second by 8 to get the megabytes per second a download will actually show.

What is a kilobyte?

A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in the decimal convention used by storage manufacturers and standards bodies.

Definition: Exactly 1,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary equivalent, 1,024 bytes, is properly the kibibyte (KiB).

Where it is used: Small file sizes, text documents, and web page weights.

Worth knowing: This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.

Megabits vs Kilobytes

The megabit and the kilobyte belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.

Frequently asked questions

How many kilobytes are in a megabit?

One megabit equals 125 kilobytes.

What is the formula to convert megabits to kilobytes?

Multiply the number of megabits by 125. To reverse it, divide by 125 instead.

How do I convert kilobytes back to megabits?

Divide by 125, which is the same as multiplying by 0.008.

How many kilobytes are in 10 megabits?

10 Mb works out to 1250 KB.

Is there anything to watch out for with megabits?

Divide advertised megabits per second by 8 to get the megabytes per second a download will actually show.

How is the megabit defined?

Exactly 1,000,000 bits, so exactly 125,000 bytes.
