Megabits to Megabytes
Type a value in either box to convert between megabits and megabytes. The factor is 0.125.
| Megabits | Megabytes |
|---|---|
| 1 Mb | 0.125 MB |
| 2 Mb | 0.25 MB |
| 3 Mb | 0.375 MB |
| 5 Mb | 0.625 MB |
| 10 Mb | 1.25 MB |
| 25 Mb | 3.125 MB |
| 50 Mb | 6.25 MB |
| 100 Mb | 12.5 MB |
How to use
- Enter a value in the Megabits field.
- The Megabytes figure appears immediately — no button to press.
- Typing in the Megabytes field converts back to Megabits the same way.
- Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.
Megabits to Megabytes formula
To convert megabits to megabytes, multiply by 0.125.
MB = Mb × 0.125
Put another way, one megabit is exactly 1/8 of a megabyte.
Why this factor: the megabit and the megabyte are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 0.125 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.
To go the other way, divide by 0.125 — or use the Megabytes to Megabits converter, which is the same calculation reversed.
Worked example
Take 4 Mb and multiply by the factor 0.125: the result is 0.5 MB.
4 Mb × 0.125 = 0.5 MB
The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.
What is a megabit?
A megabit is one million bits — the unit internet speeds are advertised in.
Definition: Exactly 1,000,000 bits, so exactly 125,000 bytes.
Where it is used: Broadband speed tiers and video streaming bitrates, quoted as Mb/s or Mbps.
Worth knowing: Divide advertised megabits per second by 8 to get the megabytes per second a download will actually show.
What is a megabyte?
A megabyte is one million bytes, the familiar unit for photos, songs and app sizes.
Definition: Exactly 1,000,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes.
Where it is used: Photo and audio file sizes, app downloads, and mobile data allowances.
Megabits vs Megabytes
The megabit and the megabyte belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.
Frequently asked questions
How many megabytes are in a megabit?
One megabit equals 0.125 megabytes.
What is the formula to convert megabits to megabytes?
Multiply the number of megabits by 0.125. To reverse it, divide by 0.125 instead.
How do I convert megabytes back to megabits?
Divide by 0.125, which is the same as multiplying by 8.
How many megabytes are in 10 megabits?
10 Mb works out to 1.25 MB.
Is there anything to watch out for with megabits?
Divide advertised megabits per second by 8 to get the megabytes per second a download will actually show.
How is the megabit defined?
Exactly 1,000,000 bits, so exactly 125,000 bytes.
