Kilobits to Bits
An instant kilobits-to-bits converter, with the formula and a reference table below.
| Kilobits | Bits |
|---|---|
| 1 Kb | 1000 bit |
| 2 Kb | 2000 bit |
| 3 Kb | 3000 bit |
| 5 Kb | 5000 bit |
| 10 Kb | 10000 bit |
| 25 Kb | 25000 bit |
| 50 Kb | 50000 bit |
| 100 Kb | 100000 bit |
How to use
- Enter a value in the Kilobits field.
- The Bits figure appears immediately — no button to press.
- Typing in the Bits field converts back to Kilobits the same way.
- Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.
Kilobits to Bits formula
Converting kilobits to bits is a single multiplication by 1000.
bit = Kb × 1000
Put another way, one kilobit is exactly 1,000 bits.
Why this factor: the kilobit and the bit are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 1000 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.
To go the other way, divide by 1000 — or use the Bits to Kilobits converter, which is the same calculation reversed.
Worked example
Given 500 Kb, multiplying by 1000 yields 500000 bit.
500 Kb × 1000 = 500000 bit
The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.
What is a kilobit?
A kilobit is 1,000 bits, used almost exclusively for data rates.
Definition: Exactly 1,000 bits, so exactly 125 bytes.
Where it is used: Audio and video bitrates, and legacy connection speeds.
What is a bit?
A bit is the smallest unit of digital information — a single binary digit, either 0 or 1.
Definition: One eighth of a byte. The name is a contraction of 'binary digit'.
Where it is used: Network and connection speeds, which are always quoted in bits per second.
Worth knowing: Lowercase 'b' is bits, uppercase 'B' is bytes. A 100 Mb/s connection delivers about 12.5 MB/s.
Kilobits vs Bits
The kilobit and the bit belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.
Frequently asked questions
How many bits are in a kilobit?
One kilobit equals 1000 bits.
What is the formula to convert kilobits to bits?
Multiply the number of kilobits by 1000. To reverse it, divide by 1000 instead.
How do I convert bits back to kilobits?
Divide by 1000, which is the same as multiplying by 0.001.
How many bits are in 10 kilobits?
10 Kb works out to 10000 bit.
Is there anything to watch out for with bits?
Lowercase 'b' is bits, uppercase 'B' is bytes. A 100 Mb/s connection delivers about 12.5 MB/s.
How is the kilobit defined?
Exactly 1,000 bits, so exactly 125 bytes.
