Kilobits to Kilobytes
Type a value in either box to convert between kilobits and kilobytes. The factor is 0.125.
| Kilobits | Kilobytes |
|---|---|
| 1 Kb | 0.125 KB |
| 2 Kb | 0.25 KB |
| 3 Kb | 0.375 KB |
| 5 Kb | 0.625 KB |
| 10 Kb | 1.25 KB |
| 25 Kb | 3.125 KB |
| 50 Kb | 6.25 KB |
| 100 Kb | 12.5 KB |
How to use
- Enter a value in the Kilobits field.
- The Kilobytes figure appears immediately — no button to press.
- Typing in the Kilobytes field converts back to Kilobits the same way.
- Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.
Kilobits to Kilobytes formula
To convert kilobits to kilobytes, multiply by 0.125.
KB = Kb × 0.125
Put another way, one kilobit is exactly 1/8 of a kilobyte.
Why this factor: the kilobit and the kilobyte are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 0.125 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.
To go the other way, divide by 0.125 — or use the Kilobytes to Kilobits converter, which is the same calculation reversed.
Worked example
Take 500 Kb and multiply by the factor 0.125: the result is 62.5 KB.
500 Kb × 0.125 = 62.5 KB
The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.
What is a kilobit?
A kilobit is 1,000 bits, used almost exclusively for data rates.
Definition: Exactly 1,000 bits, so exactly 125 bytes.
Where it is used: Audio and video bitrates, and legacy connection speeds.
What is a kilobyte?
A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in the decimal convention used by storage manufacturers and standards bodies.
Definition: Exactly 1,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary equivalent, 1,024 bytes, is properly the kibibyte (KiB).
Where it is used: Small file sizes, text documents, and web page weights.
Worth knowing: This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.
Kilobits vs Kilobytes
The kilobit and the kilobyte belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilobytes are in a kilobit?
One kilobit equals 0.125 kilobytes.
What is the formula to convert kilobits to kilobytes?
Multiply the number of kilobits by 0.125. To reverse it, divide by 0.125 instead.
How do I convert kilobytes back to kilobits?
Divide by 0.125, which is the same as multiplying by 8.
How many kilobytes are in 10 kilobits?
10 Kb works out to 1.25 KB.
Is there anything to watch out for with kilobytes?
This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.
How is the kilobit defined?
Exactly 1,000 bits, so exactly 125 bytes.
