  3. Typing in the Megabytes field converts back to Kilobits the same way.
  4. Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.

Kilobits to Megabytes formula

To convert kilobits to megabytes, multiply by 0.000125.

MB = Kb × 0.000125

Put another way, one kilobit is exactly 1/8,000 of a megabyte.

Why this factor: the kilobit and the megabyte are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 0.000125 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.

To go the other way, divide by 0.000125 — or use the Megabytes to Kilobits converter, which is the same calculation reversed.

Worked example

Given 500 Kb, multiplying by 0.000125 yields 0.0625 MB.

500 Kb × 0.000125 = 0.0625 MB

The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.

What is a kilobit?

A kilobit is 1,000 bits, used almost exclusively for data rates.

Definition: Exactly 1,000 bits, so exactly 125 bytes.

Where it is used: Audio and video bitrates, and legacy connection speeds.

What is a megabyte?

A megabyte is one million bytes, the familiar unit for photos, songs and app sizes.

Definition: Exactly 1,000,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes.

Where it is used: Photo and audio file sizes, app downloads, and mobile data allowances.

Kilobits vs Megabytes

The kilobit and the megabyte belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.

Frequently asked questions

How many megabytes are in a kilobit?

One kilobit equals 0.000125 megabytes.

What is the formula to convert kilobits to megabytes?

Multiply the number of kilobits by 0.000125. To reverse it, divide by 0.000125 instead.

How do I convert megabytes back to kilobits?

Divide by 0.000125, which is the same as multiplying by 8000.

How many megabytes are in 10 kilobits?

10 Kb works out to 0.00125 MB.

How is the kilobit defined?

Exactly 1,000 bits, so exactly 125 bytes.
