Kilobytes to Kilobits
Type a value in either box to convert between kilobytes and kilobits. The factor is 8.
| Kilobytes | Kilobits |
|---|---|
| 1 KB | 8 Kb |
| 2 KB | 16 Kb |
| 3 KB | 24 Kb |
| 5 KB | 40 Kb |
| 10 KB | 80 Kb |
| 25 KB | 200 Kb |
| 50 KB | 400 Kb |
| 100 KB | 800 Kb |
How to use
- Enter a value in the Kilobytes field.
- The Kilobits figure appears immediately — no button to press.
- Typing in the Kilobits field converts back to Kilobytes the same way.
- Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.
Kilobytes to Kilobits formula
Converting kilobytes to kilobits is a single multiplication by 8.
Kb = KB × 8
Put another way, one kilobyte is exactly 8 kilobits.
Why this factor: the kilobyte and the kilobit are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 8 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.
To go the other way, divide by 8 — or use the Kilobits to Kilobytes converter, which is the same calculation reversed.
Worked example
Given 64 KB, multiplying by 8 yields 512 Kb.
64 KB × 8 = 512 Kb
The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.
What is a kilobyte?
A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in the decimal convention used by storage manufacturers and standards bodies.
Definition: Exactly 1,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary equivalent, 1,024 bytes, is properly the kibibyte (KiB).
Where it is used: Small file sizes, text documents, and web page weights.
Worth knowing: This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.
What is a kilobit?
A kilobit is 1,000 bits, used almost exclusively for data rates.
Definition: Exactly 1,000 bits, so exactly 125 bytes.
Where it is used: Audio and video bitrates, and legacy connection speeds.
Kilobytes vs Kilobits
The kilobyte and the kilobit belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilobits are in a kilobyte?
One kilobyte equals 8 kilobits.
What is the formula to convert kilobytes to kilobits?
Multiply the number of kilobytes by 8. To reverse it, divide by 8 instead.
How do I convert kilobits back to kilobytes?
Divide by 8, which is the same as multiplying by 0.125.
How many kilobits are in 10 kilobytes?
10 KB works out to 80 Kb.
Is there anything to watch out for with kilobytes?
This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.
How is the kilobyte defined?
Exactly 1,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary equivalent, 1,024 bytes, is properly the kibibyte (KiB).
