How to use
- Enter a value in the Kilobytes field.
- The Megabits figure appears immediately — no button to press.
- Typing in the Megabits field converts back to Kilobytes the same way.
- Use the reference table for the values that come up most often.
Kilobytes to Megabits formula
To convert kilobytes to megabits, multiply by 0.008.
Mb = KB × 0.008
Put another way, one kilobyte is exactly 1/125 of a megabit.
Why this factor: the kilobyte and the megabit are both defined against the byte, so dividing one definition by the other gives 0.008 directly. Both definitions are set out in full below.
To go the other way, divide by 0.008 — or use the Megabits to Kilobytes converter, which is the same calculation reversed.
Worked example
Start with 4 KB. Multiply by 0.008 to get 0.032 Mb.
4 KB × 0.008 = 0.032 Mb
The converter above does this for any value you type, in either direction.
What is a kilobyte?
A kilobyte is 1,000 bytes in the decimal convention used by storage manufacturers and standards bodies.
Definition: Exactly 1,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary equivalent, 1,024 bytes, is properly the kibibyte (KiB).
Where it is used: Small file sizes, text documents, and web page weights.
Worth knowing: This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.
What is a megabit?
A megabit is one million bits — the unit internet speeds are advertised in.
Definition: Exactly 1,000,000 bits, so exactly 125,000 bytes.
Where it is used: Broadband speed tiers and video streaming bitrates, quoted as Mb/s or Mbps.
Worth knowing: Divide advertised megabits per second by 8 to get the megabytes per second a download will actually show.
Kilobytes vs Megabits
The kilobyte and the megabit belong to the same family of units, so converting between them is usually a matter of shifting a decimal point or applying a small whole-number factor.
Frequently asked questions
How many megabits are in a kilobyte?
One kilobyte equals 0.008 megabits.
What is the formula to convert kilobytes to megabits?
Multiply the number of kilobytes by 0.008. To reverse it, divide by 0.008 instead.
How do I convert megabits back to kilobytes?
Divide by 0.008, which is the same as multiplying by 125.
How many megabits are in 10 kilobytes?
10 KB works out to 0.08 Mb.
Is there anything to watch out for with kilobytes?
This decimal-versus-binary split is why a '1 TB' drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows: the drive uses 10¹², the OS displays 2⁴⁰.
How is the kilobyte defined?
Exactly 1,000 bytes under SI prefixes. The binary equivalent, 1,024 bytes, is properly the kibibyte (KiB).
